In late June I started my new career as a catastrophe modeling analyst for a reinsurance company. Ian was the first active catastrophe I had to model and investigate possible impacts on. Obviously the core hit was in Florida but I distinctly remember when our team was getting word from our weather guys that it was going to end up hitting the Carolinas, thinking about how the impact is different for y'all after the move. It getting recategorized as a cat 1 after being initially thought to only hit as a tropical storm really made my work a bit more stressful lol. Luckily I got to avoid working on weekends because one of our modeling partners didn't get a report out, but that was a full week of stressed Florida modeling followed by annoyed and tired ending modeling (modeling lower impact hurricanes are less work but still work where if it was reclassified back to a tropical storm we wouldn't have to send additional updates). Most stressful week on the job for sure. Now have another reason to hope for less natural disasters, other than ya know the terrible loss caused by it
Me and my family dodged Ian. All we got was a little bit of rain and wind. We didn't lose power. We got lucky since my area was in the cone of uncertainty, but it ended up moving south of us.
As someone who has lived in the Southeast my whole life but always a few hours away from the coast, I'd say what Raleigh got from Ian is the typical inland hurricane/tropical storm experience: fairly high winds and lots of branches down, rain and maybe some light flooding, and power possibly going out. I've only gone through a few that I can remember like Irma and Florence and it was usually something like that, it can be incovenient but it's a speck compared to what coastal areas have to deal with. It's nice that Hayley and Alex got their power back quickly, mine went out around 8 and didn't come back until 2am!
@@brandonkinter494 wow that’s insane! I checked the Duke Power outages the day after the storm and saw a few still going on, didn’t think they’d last that long though
Just a few days ago we had a mini version of your problem; living in this desert, it doesn't rain very often at all, but it still CAN rain, at all. And a few days ago, it started sprinkling, which was nice. But then like a minute later, the rain intensified, there was a crash of thunder, and the power went out. Was out for a few hours. What a pleasant experience.
This vlog is bringing me flashbacks to October 2018 (May have been June? Can't remember the exact date) when my area lost power. I was going to go to my boyfriends house (at the time we weren't dating) and then he lost power. So instead he came to my house and we were going to play Mario Kart on the Switch until the battery died, and as soon as he came over the power came back on. We spent the whole night laughing about it and playing games after that. Unexpected chaos creates memorable moments! And now we've been together for 4 years :)
HORSE DIVORCE VLOG RAID. That was quite a day you had, indeed. I just have to say that I love it when Stephen says something "probably isn't gonna happen" and then it still totally does. This time, it was about a potential power outage. Spoilers: it happened. :P
As a Californian, I envy you the rainy part of a hurricane, but I don't envy the heavy winds. There's heavy enough winds here for me. I'm surprised nothing fell down with the last heavy winds we had here! The last time the power went out here, I think someone at the power company had switched off a breaker accidentally.
As someone who lived in Moore County, NC for 4 years and recently moved to Charlotte. Prepare to lose power at any minor storm. We used to lose it all the time and. Almost always when there was any sort of tropical system. Duke Energy is… not great at the whole keeping the lights on thing. You’ll get pretty used to it.
I was wondering how you all faired in Raleigh with the storm. How did your parents do in Myrtle Beach? Hopefully not as bad as we had here in Florida. Our entire street which never floods was a river and we've had carpenters in here fixing water damaged drywall. Quite wild but still not as bad as where Ian landed on the west coast of the state. Looking forward to the hot sewing tips! And glad you all were able to stream something even with the storm craziness.
Something I just realized. Is the flannel shirt Mal's wearing in the vlog one of Stephen's? If so, that's so cute, and probably something I'll look forward to when my girlfriend and I commit to living with each other, since I have quite a few flannels myself she may "borrow", even though they're in tall sizes. :)
After seeing the devesstation that Hurricane Ian brought on Florida, specifically the Ft.Myers area, I am utterly heartbroken for their community. I live in Texas and don't experience the hurricane threat that Florida does, however, as someone who has spent the last 15 years vacationing in Ft.Myers and now seeing the whole town reduced to nothing, it absolutely breaks my heart. I hope the community will heal gradually with time.
The hurricane Ian vlog. yeah southwest Florida got decimated. I don't live down there, but I do sympathize. South Carolina also got hit. Heard of some damage in Myrtle Beach area since the hurricane hit around George Town/Myrtle Beach area.
Hey Stephen, what do you think about the new Mario movie trailer? I was in Cape Hatteras Island, North Carolina when Ian hit and our power went out one morning at 6 and didn't come on until 9, but it could have been worse.
*shudders* Hurricane Fiona just a little before this did some bad damage to Nova Scotia and had knocked out power for almost 5 days for me, some people are still without power, given the dates I would have had power again for 3 days when this vlog was recorded. Made me done with hurricanes for the rest of the year already, though I know hurricane season is just getting started. Hope Ian didn't do to much damage to ya'll, and my heart goes out to people in Florida.
As someone who can't attend BS because of work, trading the comment section whenever a vlog raid happens is always... A trip

For all the tribulations of this day, that dinner stream was freakin hilarious
So Alex & Hayley are planning "door is locked" the sequel? :D

The sewing talk is fascinating and I am 100% here for it
I was there live for most of this one; it was wild!
I hope those of you who are living in Florida are doing OK after that godawful storm.

Mine was out for almost three days, I just moved to the SE from west coast and it was a trip haha

The FORESHADOWING on the mention that Alex and Hayley have charcuterie stuff...
the video thumbnail made me think that the sandwich was the cause of the power loss. my brain peaked in that moment and it's all downhill from there

Stephen better start expressing uncertainty in good outcomes or else disaster will keep happening!
I'm early to a vlog, and after checking the comments, I'm questioning what was discussed during Breakfast Stream today

I've been waiting for this vlog as Haley said there was an important sewing fact in this vlog during the dinner stream

We're lucky to not get hurricane in the UK, and when we do, it's usually not as intense as what you get in America.
At long last we got the fabled sowing tips. Also belated Vlog raid.

Stephen often schedules a vlog to come out at the end of Breakfast Stream, so the people watching Breakfast Stream raid the vlog once it's over.
